I don't remember getting too many weapons from quests early in the game and feel like I bought most of my early gear from Traders. Without spoiling too much, when you do get weapons from quests (both main quests and some more in depth side quests) they will be some top tier gear. So buying the green/blue tier gear from traders won't be a waste.
